School is Over

Cameron and Mason had another great school year and received high marks for all their classes.  This was the last time Mason will be getting off earlier than Cameron and I have enjoyed spending that extra quality time with Mason.  I will miss that.
The boy's year book quotes this year are:  Cameron - My favorite celebration is Christmas because we celebrate Jesus' Birthday.  Mason - My favorite celebration is Mardi Gras because you can put up signs.

I am looking forward to next year and seeing how much the boys will learn. Way to go Cameron and Mason, 3rd and 1st grade look out.

Last time for early pick up

Can you find all the things in this picture that we love about Cameron?

Triathletes

Cameron and Mason can do it all and this time they both showed they can put it all together. They participated in the school's triathlon over the weekend and both did great. Mason swam two lengths of the pool, did a short sprint, and rode his bike for 5 minutes. Cameron did 4 lengths of the pool, 4 laps of biking, and 2 laps of running. They both were not even winded.

Cameron showed great determination and Mason has a lot to learn from his older brother. I am proud of them both and they were excited about their gold medals.

Kazakh Fising Trip

When asked if I wanted to go on a Kazakh Fishing Trip, I was a little hesitant because I have heard all the stories about vodka drinking at 5 in the morning, but I said yes anyway. I am trying to say, "Yes" to more opportunities and I always have a great experience. Isn't that what life is about - experiences?

Well the trip had no vodka, but it did have a pre-5 am wake up call to meet Yerganat (Stacey's co-worker) and Nurlan (his experienced fisherman friend). We drove in a Russian Lada about 30 minutes outside of town. Along the way I was able to see the sky change colors which was cool. We went right next to Nazarbayev 's (President of Kazakhstan) compound. The fishing spot is just big enough for one car and perfect. No one else was around and I did not see a boat or a person for the entire day.

For the fishing, we used live worms and dead shrimp. Instead of corks, the Kazakhs use a bell that is clipped on to the end of the rod once the line is in the water. They also prop up the pole with broken off sticks and place them in the ground. I liked this because you didn't have to keep watching the water every second, but you did have to listen. The fish (called Sazan) were everywhere jumping out of the water and seemed to say, "Look at me." It took us 4 hours to catch one fish. Then two got away at the net. I then reeled in my own fish. When the bell sounds you grab the pole and rip it good. Since we had lost two fish already I was determined to get him to shore and pulled him right on. The guys with me would take off their pants (see picture below) and enter the water in their underwear to make sure the net was in the right place. The fish did not put up much of a fight until after it hits land and then it seems to stay alive for hours flopping in the dirt.

I enjoyed the quiet time, the unique sandwiches, bread with stuffed beef, and lots of tea. The guys would heat the tea up with a tea pot on a small fire. After we fished for about 7 hours I didn't know how we were going to get the fish back. I am used to ice chests full of ice and plenty of room, but when in Kazakhstan do as the Kazakhs do. We caught 5 fish and put a few in the only plastic grocery store bags we had and the rest in on the floor in the back of Nurlan’s car. When we started the ride home I could hear the fish flopping around. That fish knew his life was over.

I showed the boys the fish and since our village clubhouse kitchen was open I asked them to clean and cook my two fish.  I just wanted a little and gave them the rest. They did it without a problem and were a little surprised that I had I caught them myself.  Unfortunately, they didn't take out the bones so it was hard to eat around them, but it was still great to eat something I caught myself.   Next time I want to take the boys.

Not Your Typical Field Trip

Living here has its challenges and it also brings great opportunities. Cameron thrives in these situations. He is eager to try everything and that is one of the many things I love about him. I sometime look back and think, "What if I tried everything the way he does?"

Cameron's class got a chance to go see a real Camel Farm and it surely did not disappoint. I even wanted to go, but space was limited so Cameron filled me in on the details. He was the first in line for the camel ride out in the steppe. He was also the only one to go twice and that does not surprise me. The class also was able to see the camel get sheared. A surprise for the class was that they were able to see the baby camel. The owner said at first that children were not allowed to see the baby because it would make it upset, but I guess changed his mind.

What a great adventure to take a camel ride on a camel farm out in the steppe in Kazakhstan. You won’t find this experience in any zoo.

King Mason

We finally had another King's Day and since we had not had it in a while we drew names to see what the order would be. Mason asked Mama, "Can you pick me?" Sure enough Stacey picked Mason first so today was his King's Day.
Mason decided to eat Fruity Pebbles for breakfast, ride his scooter and bikes outside with his friends, listen to his iPod, eat mac and cheese for lunch, go swimming with his friends, watch Transformers and play the DS, eat fish sticks and have a cookie for dessert, and also sprinkle in lots of candy throughout the day. He had a fine day as king and no one will forget that his first rule was NO WORK. Does that tell us something about him?

No Work, Yeah!!!

Ok, Not a Rich King

Or a serious King

But a sweet one

Easter

I wouldn't say it was a Happy Easter here in the Offner Family. Mason had to be taught a lesson (time will tell if he learns from this) because he is consistently not listening to what we tell him to do. He knows he is wrong and does it anyway. He was punished all weekend and that meant no Easter Egg Hunt, but it doesn't look like it affected him at all because even while he was punished he still did not listen. How do you get through to your child when the punishments don't work?

In addition to Mason being punished, I have been hobbling around on crutches for 5 days since I severely sprained my ankle while playing basketball. I must have jumped really high because he leg is bruised and swollen in many areas. I tried to take pictures, but it just doesn't capture it.

We are fortunate because we are all together and thankful that Jesus died for us and since we believe in him can go to heaven when we die. That I am Thankful for.

A little candy

Which one is bigger?

Star of the Week

Mason was "Star of the Week" at school.  He is always our star.  Some of the activities were:  making a poster of all the fun things he likes to do, telling his favorite things (at least for that moment), snack for his class (brownies), and clues about his favorite toys.  You can see by the pictures why Mason is loved by all.

Mason's First Loose Tooth

Mason has been very excited ever since his tooth started to be loose.  He was constantly touching it and if you weren't talking about it he was tell you in a sobbing voice, "No one cares about my loose tooth."  His permanent tooth was coming up behind it and I got a bit concerned that he would need to go to the dentist and that would be difficult here so I encourage him to wiggle and twist his tooth.  I told him it may hurt a little, but that was okay.  He never complained about the pain and then a few days later he pulled it out.
The tooth fairy came that night about gave him 200 Tenge ($1.30).  Enjoy the pictures and videos.

Shipment has arrived

It is always nice to get the things you purchased even if it is three months later.  Mason was very excited to see his toy train again.  Cameron wanted his remote control car.  They were very helpful delivering items to various places in the house as I unpacked the boxes.  The incentive of more toys never hurts though.
